Suggest a Moment

Paolo Rossi’s hatrick against Brazil in ’82, Gascoigne’s tears at Italia ’90, Nobby’s dance in ’66 and Zidane’s antics during ’06.

It’s the World Cup. What’s yours?

Most iconic moment – The Battle of Santiago. In 1962 the world cup hosts, Chile, played Italy during a group game, which included punch ups, spitting, broken noses and flying kicks. Chile won the match 2-0 after 2 Italians had been sent off. David Coleman described the match, “the most stupid, appalling, disgusting and disgraceful exhibition of football, possibly in the history of the game.”

And they say football’s gone soft Eddy….sounds like an epic. I’ll check it out…

Got to be David Platt’s winner from a Gazza free kick in the dying seconds against Belgium, to avoid penalties, in the 1990 World Cup. I was in a bar in Spain watching this and the joint was accidentally wrecked in the celebrations which followed that goal. Amazing moment – although I did feel sorry for the bar owner.

it has to be david o leary scoring the winning goal
in penalty shoot out against romania at ittalia 90. the whole of ireland
    went wild.

  5. RobArtisan says:

Gascoigne teasing the Dutch defence in his first world cup and the tears – who could forget Viz’s crying Gazza doll to relive those world cup memories?

  6. rob says:

I vaguely remember in the 1986 world cup (possibly) lots of the England squad dropping in lyrics from pop hits of the day into interviews (we were ‘against all odds’, they were ‘wild boys’, etc).

Failing that Graham Poll booking Simunic for a third time is always good for the commentators incredulity.

France v Germany 1982 Semi Final – Schumacher inflicts GBH on Battiston and then walks around his area like a guy who has just won a fight outside a pub whilst Battiston is given oxygen on the pitch.

  8. colin says:

Maradona in 86 – first and last world cup to be won by one player

    second goal v england
goal v belgium in semi final – how many players in his way!
